Suuuuuungka!

Who knows how to play Sungka?

What's Sungka you may be thinking? Well, let's allow good old Wiki to define it for us...

Congkak (pronounced [tʃoŋkaʔ]) is a mancala game played in the island of Borneo, Singapore, and Peninsular Malaysia. Minor variants are known as Tchonka, Naranj, Dakon or Sungka and are played in Indonesia (mostly Java), Sri Lanka, the Maldives, southern Thailand, the Philippines and the Marianas. In Indonesia, it is called "Congklak" meaning cowrie shells, which are often used as pieces. On the island of Java, it is called "Dakon" and little red seeds are used as pieces. In the Philippines it is called "Sungka" and shells are used as pieces. Congkak is believed to originate from the word ‘congak’ which in old Malay Language means count.

When we were in Boracay last April, this game was played during our free time. I love playing it! Especially if my opponent's Arvic because I pretty much win all the time. Haha! Kidding aside, I really think I'm good at it. And I credit the 'talent' to my childhood playing days. Everyone in my family seems good at it. And we have all sorts of it. Big ones, small ones, even chairs that have holes on it ala-Sungka so we can play and sit on it at the same time. Neat! If I remember well.. it was either Sungka, BINGO, or Dart boards that we were addicted too during Summer breaks when I was young(er).

The master at work.. Hahaha!

It was difficult for Arvic to grab and distribute the shells quickly.
Another one of his "excuses" for not winning. :P
Hehehe. Love you Dear!

Let the games begin...

I believe games like this (together with snakes and ladders, boggle, monopoly, scrabble, millionaire's game) should definitely make a comeback. Yes, high-tech video games are great but kids should still go through their board-game, family games and larong kalye phase, I think it'll be healthy for them. :)

Who wants to play? :)

CARPE DIEM!
I'm out.

Brings back old memories too! Wifey and I saw some sungka in MOA (can't recall the store) and plan to buy one of these days.

@kg - yuh!! may sunog-sunog.. the more you have, the less the chances of winning. haha!

I like playing sungka when I was small! Kaya lang pag nagpapabili ako ayaw nila.. bad luck daw sa bahay.. dunno why.. Nakikilaro lang tuloy ako sa kapitbahay.. hehehe

Btw, I like your template =)

@Eliza - thanks! took some effort to fix it. Haha! As for the sungka.. narinig ko nga rin yung sinasabe nila na malas daw.. I don't know if it's true. We have lots of them pa naman. Hahaha!

Ba-Bye Ate

Today was quite a sad day for our family. For a very close-knit family, goodbyes are really extra difficult to say . Especially if the one leaving will be miles and seas away. My Ate (with her husband) left this morning for the US. They'll be starting their new life there. She already has work so I don't need to worry about that anyway, and I'm sure that she'll definitely do well. My parents were really sad... maybe it's the thought of being "away" from her. Tipong you have to hop on a plane pa just to be able to get to her. The whole family has US visa naman , we can go there anytime (as long as we have the money I guess :p) Yes, I cried a lot as well... and I guess it's because of all the bilins I got from her. The one that stuck the most " Ikaw na bahala dito ha.. Alagaan mo sila Mama and Papa. Si Ivan ha... Wag mo silang pabayaan. " My nephew on the other hand was a different story... he was eager to go home already when we got to NAIA.

Chuper Excited!

2 weeks to go.. then I'll be painting HongKong and Macau red with my Sanity Keepers... Any suggestions on where to go to? Beside from the usual night market, HK Disneyland and Ocean Park. Any cheap foodtrip areas? Plus, it's Arvic's first time in HongKong too. So I'm extra excited for him too. Let the countdown begin!I am sooooo excited already! :) My bday's coming up in more or less 2 weeks also. Yey! Turning 25 and excited about it! :D Planning to spend the weekend before my actual bday with the whole family somewhere. Let's see... :) ======= Yesterday, had a massage at TonTon's again. I loved it! Just what I needed. I love that place.. Not too crowded. And not too expensive too! :) ======= Work starts again tomorrow. Oh well.... positive side? At least I'll have enough moolah to enjoy HongKong. Thank you work! :P CARPE DIEM! I'm out.

Boracay '09 : R & R

Long overdue Bora post. :P Before Summer actually ends.. I just felt that I should get my Bora series of posts over and done with.:) It was my second time in Boracay... and I can honestly say that this was the first time that I actually enjoyed the beach and the sand. :) My first trip there was last year and the itinerary for the whole stay was planned already, so it was mostly activities like ATV, island hopping, snorkeling. This year, it was mostly swimming and sitting around. Complete relaxation. :) The whole group stayed at SUR. A really neat resort located in Station 1. A white building, pretty and cozy huts, nice view and a really nice beach front... *Sigh*.. Take me back? I suddenly miss the sun, sand and free time. CARPE DIEM! I'm out.
